About Consumer Protection

The Consumer Protection division of Local Government Industry Regulation and Safety works to ensure that Western Australians are treated fairly in their everyday transactions and dealings with businesses.

They develop, enforce, and promote laws around buying and selling goods and services, tenancy and property issues, licensing and registration, warranties and refunds, scam prevention, and protections for vulnerable consumers.

When disputes arise—such as with faulty products, misleading trade practices or unfair contracts—they provide advice, assist in mediating complaints, and if necessary take regulatory or legal action.

In doing so the division aims to maintain trust in markets, discourage unfair conduct, and help consumers understand their rights and responsibilities.

How they can help:

  • Housing and accommodation
  • Buying and selling products and services for consumers and businesses
  • Motor cars
  • Scams, travelling conmen and unlicensed traders
  • Unsafe products
  • Charities and associations
  • Licences and registrations
  • Making complaints
